From Nippers to Kona: A Kozii Athlete's Ironman Journey

At Kozii, we're all about celebrating the journey and we’d like to officially welcome Jaz to the Team Kozii family! From her early days chasing surf as a nipper on the sandy shores of Lennox, to now training for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, Jaz’s story is one of passion, grit, and unwavering determination.

Jaz is not only an incredible athlete, but also an inspiring person, showing what’s possible when you set your sights high and put in the work. This is just the beginning of her road to Kona, and we’re so excited to have you along for the ride.

We sat down with Jaz to chat all things training, motivation, and what keeps her coming back to Kozii!

So what Is an Ironman?

This gruelling race consists of a 3.8 km swim, followed by a 180 km bike ride, and then a 42.2 km marathon run — all completed back-to-back in one day. It’s one of the most physically and mentally demanding endurance events in the world. Just finishing an Ironman is a massive achievement, qualifying for the World Championship in Kona is next level.

We know you’ve been wearing Kozii since your nipper days, that’s loyalty! What has kept you coming back to Kozii over the years, and what do you love most about the brand?

What's kept me coming back to Kozii is the comfort and support I feel whilst I am swimming/training! Along with feeling cute and the cut of the swimwear being flattering!! I also love what Kozii is about and how they treat their community!

KONA! That’s the dream race for so many athletes — and you're heading there. How did you qualify, and what is the story behind getting to this incredible milestone?

It is still crazy to me! I won my age group at my first Ironman, which was Busselton in December last year, and that's how I got a spot for Kona! I had 10 months to train for the full IM in Busselton, Western Australia, and it was one of the best experiences ever - I loved it!

The 10 months were not easy as I was completely new to it all... the only thing I had was swimming from SLS as a young kid, but even then I hadn't swum in YEARS... When I crossed that finish line in Busselton it was one of the best moments ever.

Now I am around 8-ish weeks out from Kona and I am so excited! Training looks a lot different to last year with a much more demanding schedule, but I absolutely love it.

What does a typical training week look like for you? We want the inside scoop on your schedule (early alarms and all)!

So it does change a little week to week but at the moment I am doing around 23–27 hours of training each week!

My alarm tends to go off at 4 - 4:30, but some mornings 3:30am haha. In the morning I will always smash out a session, whether that's a big ride or run. I will then do a chunk of work and head off for a second session at lunch!

This will be followed by more work and potentially a 3rd session in the arvo if that's on the cards for that day! Being productive with my time is a must so I can keep on top of work and life around training!

Let’s talk fuel! What’s your go-to pre-training meal? And what’s your fave post-session meal to refuel and recover?

Fuel is king! My pre-training meal at the moment is Weet-Bix topped with jam and honey. I will make it the night before so when I head to the fridge at very early hours of the morning I can grab it and have a coffee! I will always make time to eat before I train, so no matter what time I get up I am having my Weet-Bix haha.

My go-to post-training meal will often be eggs on toast with cottage cheese, avo, tomato and ham - with a couple of pieces of fruit on the side!

Inspired? We sure are. From humble beginnings to heading to Kona, this journey proves what passion, hard work, and a supportive community can do. Keep your eyes peeled, we’ll be cheering loud and proud come race day!
